About the Comments

Through the years I've read many posts about what I'm going to post about, but I hope that mine is more a reflection on me and what I'm about. This post is about you readers that read but don't comment. ( Hi! ) Usually bloggers say friendly stuff like "Hey' Ya'll! Don't be afraid to comment!" or something like that. But I understand that there are reasons not to comment.

~

I read some blogs that I don't comment on and here are the reasons:

1. - I prefer to comment on blogs that the blogger responds to the comment, so if a blogger does not respond to comments, I don't leave a comment. Well, except for Naomi. (There's always an exception to every rule.)

2. - I read a few blogs that the blogger is so very out there to me that I feel like I don't have anything to say to them except: "What's wrong with you!??!" or "Gross! Who does that!!!!???" And that's not a good idea and I honestly don't even know why I read those blogs. (Seriously. What's wrong with me?)

3. - Some blogs are just so big and popular that it seems pointless to leave a comment. I only read one of those.

4. - Sometimes I don't post a comment on a blog that I am a regular commenter on because the subject matter is out of my reach or basically, I feel like I have nothing to contribute.

5. - If someone has a lot of photography posts I feel goofy saying "Nice picture!" over and over again. I am not qualified to remark on how they captured the light or anything. To me they are just nice pictures.

~

So to my readers that don't comment, I know it can't be for reasons 1, 3, or 5. I don't think #4 could be it, so I guess you find me terribly annoying (#2). Or maybe it's not about me at all. Maybe you're just shy. If you want to pipe in, please do. I love opinions.

And to you fellow bloggers that leave comments on a regular basis: Thanks! Every comment is like finding money in a coat pocket that you forgot about.

Oh, I'm so happy to learn I don't fall into the second one...the "Ooh, that's gross...who does that?" category.

I like how you pay attention to little details and become "conversational" in your comments on my blog. I love when I respond and someone comes back and comments on it...a little dialogue back and forth. It rarely happens, but with you, I believe it's happened twice.

Like you, I don't comment when I see 60 comments, although you'd be surprised. Jay aka Cynical Bastard has a ton of comments (daily) and he replies to almost every one of them. You should check out his blog sometime. He's a riot.

Anyway, I like this post. Maybe it'll encourage the lurkers to come out of their shells and at least say hello.

Have a great weekend!!

I lurk for pretty much the same reasons you do...

Great post! I remember having a similar conversation about this topic. I love when people leave comments but I also understand that sometimes for a lurker it may seem a bit difficult to jump in and say "hi!" so like you, I lurk to a few blogs but not that many, I'm too busy these days.

I don't have many people leave comments (to me it's not a popularity contest, if you don't like what you read, not my fault) and it's totally ok with me because I can really interact with them. Of course, my topics are not too challenging these days lol so I can understand having lurkers who feel pointless to respond to my gushing about running! lol

Sometimes, I don't leave a comment on a post that is over a few days old (because I'm slow at times catching up) but like you say it is exciting to get comments - like a free gift.

I like the exchange that sometimes happens too in comments - sometimes that can be more entertaining than the original post!

Your motivations for commentary or lack thereof are virtually the same as mine. And I won't comment just to prove I've been 'there' but only if I have something to write. Doesn't mean I haven't read you or others, however.

I am tres guilty of No. 1: Not commenting back. I love every comment too, but more often than not I just get busy too busy to respond to every comment, OR, as you said on the photo blog commenting...many people say much the same thing in their comments, and I can't think of a 8 witty-but-separate responses.

And if I don't comment on your blog, I'd like to let you know right NOW, that sometimes I just do a quick scan through my bloglines, to see if any of my "favorite" bloggers have posted--I'll get to the others later--well, you fall into the favorites, and I have to read it right NOW!

Sometimes(excuses, excuses) I'm reading from my boss's computer, which, for some reason, will not let me comment on people's blogs, some weird firewall or something.

Are you ever amazed at which of your blogs draw the most comments, and which don't?

I have one blog I read only for her post's tags which, for some reason, I find hilarious. Hehe. Of course I can't comment about that... :)

Scarlet,
~~It's funny you mentioned the "little details" because I always find it fascinating when the comments are all about different aspects of the blogs. Often I'll read someone's post and zero in on a few aspects of it and then be surprised that the other readers are talking about completely different "details."

Jazz,
~~Great minds think alike.

Urban,
~~You will be glad in the future that you posted all your running info. You'll always be able to compare times and strategies.

VioletSky,
~~When I am late reading a post, I usually make a reference to the old post in the most recent post. It's like normal conversation when you suddenly say, "Oh and about what you were talking about yesterday..."

Ian,
~~I know. Sometimes I want to say "I came by!" but that would be silly. Besides most everyone has these gadgets now to tell you who came by.

GnightGirl,
~~That's a great compliment! I know which one you are on my feedjit and am always happy when you stop by - I realize you have a lot of irons in the fire. And yes, it's interesting that some posts really strike a chord with people and other posts, people are like, "Meh, whatever."

Jammie,
~~Is that like the labels thingie? I hardly notice those but have noticed a few odd ones. I'll start looking at them again.

I agree completely with your reasoning. I always feel kind of snubbed when I leave a comment (that took some thought, time and effort to write) and it's just ignored. Some bloggers never respond to their comments. I usually don't comment there much. Also when I read and comment on someone's blog regularly and they almost never comment on mine, I'm kind of reluctant to keep commenting on theirs. Kind of like a friend that you keep inviting over or out somewhere and they never reciprocate. A really good topic -- I could do a whole post on this myself...

Xup,
~~I feel bad that you say you feel snubbed sometimes, but because you are such a prolific blogger, I miss some of your posts. I would have had a lot to say about the one regarding changing the past, but I felt I was too late and then the next one about relationships would have just made people roll their eyes if I had said anything because My Sweetie, really is just that. But I DO read all of your posts!

I'm not a blogger, but your blog is lots 'o' fun. I like to leave comments and always look forward to your replies back to me! You're always so clever and funny! ;-)

Carole,
~~Well, you're just a sweetie pie! I look forward to our next lunch out. I stopped at Chili's today on my way to Lowe's and was thinking of you. (I got the moulding/trim stuff.)

Tags or Categories or Labels, yes, that's what I'm talking about. :)

Oddly, Wordpress, the software I use, has both. I'm not sure what the point of having both is, other than to cause chaos and confusion under the guise of being organized.

I don't expect everyone to comment ALL the time, but some people never comment. I get that I roll the posts out a little too fast sometimes, but rest assured I never miss a comment. All the new comments are always listed in my stats and I check every day even when the post is days or weeks or even months old. And people are still reading the old posts all the time (the stats tell me that, too), so even late comments are read.

geewits said...

Jammie,
~~Let me know who has the funny tags.

Xup,
~~I don't have anything to tell me if there is a comment, so I don't usually check very old posts. I just know that I have some very regular readers (according to feedjit) that have never left a comment. (shrug)
