Not Like Other People

I've noticed that most people like a song because of the lyrics. The words say something to them or remind them of something. I do have a lot of songs that I like that remind me of something but not because of the words. It's because of what was going on when the song was out or the song was playing in a certain place. I actually feel pretty stupid sometimes when I realize I don't know any of the words to some of my favorite songs. I'm not like that with all of my favorite songs. I know every word to "Daniel" and know what it's all about and many others, but I'd say half of my favorite songs, I just like the way they sound. One of my favorite songs is "C'mon Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the song but don't have a clue what the words are or what it's about. I guess I go more for the sound of a song or something. Anyway, the other day, I thought maybe I should print out the lyrics and play it over and over and try to learn what it's all about. Well I have played it, but I haven't printed out the lyrics yet. Or maybe I'll just keep enjoying it as it is. It just makes me happy. Do you like it?

Meh, I don't think I really understand music at all. The only time I really enjoy music is if I'm at a concert and totally relaxed and have nothing to do or think about except the music. And it's not too loud. (I think I blogged about this before -- I have no soul).

I love that song!! It's one of my favorites on an 80s CD I play all the time...and I have no idea what it's about. Train in Vain by The Clash is another one I like that has no real "significance" other than...I like the beat.

I know exactly what you mean about songs and the feelings they bring back because of something that was going on in your life. "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins always pierces my heart because it reminds me of the spring my ex-boyfriend died. They played it on the radio constantly. I hear that song today and it takes me back there...I can smell the rain, picture his tombstone...everything. It's a very hard song for me to listen to even today.

Gee, I googled, "C'mon Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners, and you were hit number 5! haha

I love this song. Takes me back to a very happy time. I'm like you. I often like a song because of the time in my life when it plays, or the way it sounds. Sometimes...years later, I'm so surprised to find out what the lyrics mean. Take Steely Dan for example! Now, I'm starting to listen to the lyrics; then, I just loved the music!

Xup,
~~I guess you are on one end of the spectrum and Urban Animal on the other (she has those things in her ears all day) and I'm somewhere in the middle. I love music but don't have a need to actually play it because there is always a song in my head.

Scarlet,
~~There's nothing like a song that makes you almost instantly burst into tears. I have a few of those associated with Dad.

Carole,
~~That's kinda funny, because I know all the words to my favorite Steely Dan tunes and even know some of the stories behind them. I had a great time hangin' with you on Friday!

I like music ok, good thing too because Mr. Jazz is the type to have music on 5 minutes after he gets up in the morning. Though sometimes I do request total silence...

If it were just myself, I wouldn't have music on that often. Sometimes I just need the quiet.

hehehehe geewits, you know me too well :) but I must clarify though, I don't always have them things plugged in my ears. This song also makes me happy just listening to it. I don't know all the words but it's ok, I'm happy when I hear it and that's good enough for me!

I love music and I also like silence. One makes me appreciate the other. For example, many times on a Saturday morning the only sound that can be heard in my condo is the cat walking around. I don't put on music at all until much later.

But I will say that I respond more to music than to words, that comes later. There are many songs that the melody sends shivers down my spine and then I discover the words are so meaningful to me. Happens a lot.

Thank you for mentioning C'mon Eleen. It's one of my favorites, too. And Dexy is one of my favorite and undervalued groups.

Jazz,
~~I like quiet, too. I miss it this time of year with the AC constantly toiling and all the ceiling fans whirring away.

Urban,
~~That's pretty cool that you find out later that the words are also good.

Ian,
~~It really is a great song.

I honestly don't now this song and, well....It truly isn't my cup of tea. I come from a time when you couuld understand all the lyrucs to any given song in POP Music, and Broadway, and films...But Music is verry important to me and I always here the music first. And sometimes though I can hear and understand the lyrics of certain songs---Well, sometimes I just never learn all the lyrics.

About Obama: I heard someoe on MSNBC say he writes his own speeched. I must say they sound that way...And I think that he really has a way about him. That Speech was FANTASTIC!
