It Floats

I just realized something today. My mess and clutter are like a floating seaweed clump in the ocean. With the ocean being my house. My friend/neighbor Carole came over on Tuesday to bring me some delicious homemade Italian Orange Ice and I was happy to show her my clean library. My library has been so cluttered and messy for so long that Carole thought that green chair was new. That chair has always been there, but she could never see it because of the mess. I should be embarrassed, but it was just funny to me. I told my husband when he got home and he thought it was funny too. Now every time I look in there I picture Carole saying, "Is that chair new?" and it cracks me up.
~
So I'm all proud of my clean library and then I bring Carole through (to this room) to show her the window view of the new wall that my neighbor put up between our yards, and then I realize that the seaweed clump has drifted in here. This room is horribly cluttered and messy and I never really noticed until I brought Carole in here. How is that? Is all my junk invisible unless someone else is in the room? Am I just moving it around the house without realizing it? My goal this weekend is to declutter every room in the house (except the guest room, hey! I know, don't even say it!). I have to somehow rid my ocean of this clump of seaweed. And since my mess seems to become somewhat invisible to me over time, I should have Carole come over more often so I can see it.

Hey Gee,
I really think the main reason I hadn't noticed that green chair, besides the fact that I'm kind of spacey, is because the main thing I noticed in that room before was the beautiful painting of your father. It reminded me of Hemingway, and totally caught my attention! Seriously, if I closed my eyes and someone asked me what color shirt I had on, I might not be able to tell them. Sometimes I just have a hard time paying attention to details lately. And you know how I'm always saying "Did I already tell you that?". I think you call it "Mental Paws".

As for that other room, it looks lived in as it should!! Sometimes we leave wood working projects or such in the living room. You just haven't been over during my most cluttered times!

Frankly, I really appreciate the fact that you're not all up tight about stuff like that.

Your library does look beautiful though, and I'm glad you liked the Orange Ice. :) It reminds me of the ice we got in little Italy in NYC last summer.

Hmmm the seaweed excuse. I like that, mind if I use it?

"Not my fault, it's the seaweed effect!"

Yeah.

Hey geewits, just say to yourself, "it ain't messy, it's just has a lived in look." Entropy will prevail!

Funny, when I want to get *every* room in my house decluttered, I imagine giving my boss a tour. He's the sort that will make us crawl around on the carpet to find the single staple we dropped, grumbling "nothing but pigs work here!"

When Carole doesn't work for you anymore, imagine HIM coming over.

I love the lived in look! Much much better :) But I also like the seaweed effect, now that has class! I must say that since my "episode", I have disposed of a LOT of stuff so my decluttering is pretty much up done.

However, don't look too closely on shelves, you may see dust. Can it be counted as seaweed effect too? lol

Better a seaweed mess that drifts from room to room than a net mess which covers everything.

I don't think you should set yourself such ambitious goals; especially in this heat...and there'll be dust and you'll have to do a lot of bending and stuff and you'll get all tired out and you'll miss some of the games. Really, the stuff isn't going anywhere, what's the rush?

I know the feeling -- I was very proud of my organized bookcase. The rest of the place is a wreck, but that bookcase is perfect.

your library looks very inviting. Carole can come and influence me to clean up my office/library if she wants to.

I need to declutter my office area, but I have so many books and journals that I don't know where to begin. Maybe I should toss everything and start fresh.

Carole,
~~If I was going to be uptight about you seeing my messy house, I wouldn't ever be able to let you in! Your house always looks so nice and clean, I always think you think I'm a slob. I'm not a slob, I'm just very lazy.

Jazz,
~~You may use it! I imagine your place is very neat though.

Big Brother,
~~"Lived in" is fine but there are only two of us and this room looks like 8 people live here.

Gnightgirl,
~~I use something like that, except I call it "company ready." As in, I want to make my house company ready, except I rarely do unless I'm actually having company. Maybe I should start inviting people over.

Urban,
~~I am incapable of seeing dust. Dust? What's dust?

Naomi,
~~My bedroom is a contrast, some parts are very neat, but my dresser is ridiculous.

Ticknart,
~~Tell that to my daughter.

Xup,
~~I like the way you think. Unfortunately I will not to be able to use the heat as an excuse. it is supposed to drop to the high 80's on Saturday.

Michael,
~~I think it's important to have at least one very neat spot to escape to. My library used to be that and I really missed it. It's good to have it back. It's a great reading and phone chatting room.

Ian,
~~You have a pass. I believe in your line of work, you're actually supposed to have a messy office.

JR,
~~Pick one section to do. Make that your goal to do just that one small section. After that it will just come naturally.
