Which Way to the Harness Store?

I saw a claymation TV commercial tonight that had a cat in it and my weird brain went, "I want to make a clay cat!" So I made this little guy:

That's how any and all of my creative endeavors come about. I get a brain zing and then I want to do it. It's the same with anything: a meal, the footstool, the coffee table, the cat pillows, my sponged bathroom walls. But I don't really have any control over it. When a bunch of you said, "You should have your own TV show!" I laughed because I can't just do this stuff. It has to happen on its own.
~
And the really weird part is, after I've actually done something I look at it and go, "Wow! I can't believe I did that. I couldn't do that again if you held a gun to my head." This old sketch of comics was in an old spiral notebook:

I used to run across it once in a while and it still amazes me. The last time I found it, I cut it out and framed it - and I still can't believe I drew that stuff. Well, except for Snoopy. I've been drawing Snoopy since I was in Junior High. I think I drew those in the 80's and I remember that I was reading the comics and had a sudden urge to draw some of them. It was totally a one time deal and has never happened again.
~
I just wish I could somehow harness these creative spurts and use them at will, but I can't. And it's really pretty goofy to be walking around in your own house constantly asking yourself, "How did I do that?"

You're your worst critic because I see talent in everything you've shown us, and the fact that you could draw those cartoons (at any point in your life) means you can draw. The hand never forgets! With a little technique and practice, you could do it again and much more. Hey, if I can do it...

Anyway, I was one of the ones who said maybe you should have your own show, and now I'm CONVINCED you should have your own show!

The clay cat is awesome!!

Well, even if you have no idea how you did it, it's in there somewhere. My creative endeavours are completely embarrassing.

Mimicry is a talent ... love your clay cat ...

At least you've got talent even if you don't know where it comes from.

I love Andy Capp! Haven't read the strips for the longest while. I think it's time for a pint, isn't it?

Geewits, you are VERY talented! I didn't know you could draw and sculpt both! I know exactly what you mean about the inspiration hitting though, because I'm very similar. But I have to agree with Scarlet, I do believe if you took classes to hone your art skills, and practiced regularly whether you felt the urge or not, the artist in you would come out quicker and easier than you think.
Lucy doesn't look very happy. ahhh... :)

The fact that you had clay available to make that cat says a lot about the differences between you and I. I decide to make anything, and I need to go buy have the stuff, which usually tires me out....

oh, by the way, cool cat!

Everybody is right. And I think that most people who are creative, create that same way. The trick is disciplining the creativity -- which is what they teach you in art/drama/music/writing school (if you're not able to harness and discipline it on your own) That way you'll be able to be creative regularly, use the spurts of inspiration to build and develop something. Like a person might be very musical and rhythmic and kick up a storm down at the local disco, but doesn't really know how else to use those talents. along comes dance school to teach him about his body and different choreographies and lines and movement and all that other stuff they teach there. So, go get your TV show now.

Very cute Cat! I know what you mean about inspiration....That is how all my creative endeavors have come into being....

And I also feel very similar about things I've painted a long long time ago...I look at some of them and cannot believe I did it. The complexity just boggles my mind!
In a way, I find that rather exciting...Don't you?
LOVE those drawings, by the way.

Scarlet,
~~You're an artist so you probably think it's easy. My hand? It forgot. Carole believes as you do and is trying to talk me into lessons.

Jazz,
~~I don't believe that. I saw pictures of your house.

Daryl,
~~It's interesting you used the word "mimicry." When I was a graphic artist I always used to say, "I can recreate anything, but create? Not so much."

Big Brother,
~~That's true, I guess.

Mr. Jazz,
~~It's always pint time somewhere! You know I wondered if anyone young would read this and not recognize that character.

Carole,
~~Maybe we should take that drawing class together?

VioletSky,
~~I'm one of those people that picks up random artsy supplies whenever I'm in the store for something else. It's odd how I'll get an idea to do something and look through my stuff and I have exactly what I need.

Xup,
~~What could we call the show? "Things a crazy person can create at home?"

Naomi,
~~I like that you get that feeling too. I just assumed that since you had gallery showings, you were all just blase about your work. It's cool that you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Gee, that sounds like fun! I'll show you my drawings soon too. :)

Carole,
~~Cool Beans!

I can totally relate to you sentiments in this post. I can periodically knock out a drawing, or painting or project, but I have to be highly motivated and/or have the time to complete a project.

One simply can NOT put a gun to my head, and force me to produce their agenda. A "superior" in my workplace, upon learning that I can draw, once gave me an assignment of drawing that included lots of children, and lots of musical instruments. I simply stated "I can't do that!" She angrily said "You CAN and you WILL." After that, even if I'd been inclined to give it a shot, I was so pissed at her ordering me like she owned me that I couldn't have drawn a stick!

Ok, that was an aside, but I still relate to this. Any time I finish something, I think "where did that come from?"

Gnightgirl,
~~Glad you get it! Children with musical instruments? I could do that with stick figures.
