The Life of Food

I read one of those Heloise hints from some lady not too long ago and she said that with her busy family, they prepare meals for a week every Sunday. I hope they freeze the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday meals. I don't know about you, but I have a three day fridge rule. And by three days, I mean it's inedible in three days. If it doesn't get eaten within 2 1/2 days, it is thrown out. 72 hours is too long. If I know it won't be eaten and it's something particularly good, I will freeze it. My mom has told me horror stories about my step-dad finding something in the back of the fridge and eating it. I can't believe he is still alive.
~
I also see those articles every year around Thanksgiving with catchy titles like "Great Recipes For A Week Of Turkey!!" And they never mention freezing. YUCK! Is it just me? I'd like to hear your opinions. How long do you keep leftovers?

I don't typically freeze and do the same as the other lady...make the meals on Saturday or Sunday for the week. Makes the week a lot easier. It doesn't seem to bug me. :)

I'm with emerrube on this one. I don't much worry about it. Obviously, I won't eat something that's been in the fridge too long, but I'm pretty much OK with a week.

If you look at that experiment Jazz has been doing with "The Bread", you can see that a week or two in the fridge doesn't bother us. As a matter of fact, my beer stays in the fridge for much longer and I never found it to be altered in any way :-)

I agree with you 100%! Either I freeze it, eat it quickly, or throw it out after 3 days. That includes cooked foods only of course. Funny play on words by emerrube "it doesn't seem to "bug" me". :D

emerrube,
~~Actually I thought "maybe it's just me" but Carole is with me on this. I just picture food decaying after 3 days and it gives me the heebie jeebs.

Jazz,
~~I bet you guys are too cool to have leftovers for very long.

Mr. Jazz,
~~Beer for much longer? My beer is in the fridge for about 24 hours. Not that I worry about it going bad - I just drink it all up.

Carole,
~~Nice to know I'm not the only one here.

Gee, I've heard Alton Brown on the Food Network say "after 72 hours - throw it out" so many times. I always did that anyway, but if the food experts are saying it...and Alton is surely a food expert, right! :D

I have no trouble keeping food for a week, but I do always smell and take a tiny bite first, just to be on the safe side. If in doubt I pitch it. I have a neighbour who won't even keep leftovers for a day - I get a lot of extra food from her. Why it is okay for me to eat and not her is a question I often ask myself as I munch away on cold pizza or osso buco or pudding....
