TV and Small Talk

I was thinking about my nephew today. I was thinking about a fun conversation we had about a TV show. And then I was thinking about what the odds were that we watched that particular show and those two particular episodes. But more on that in a minute.
~
Back "in the day" when we had the three networks, it was always easy to make small talk with someone you didn't know very well by discussing TV shows. It probably took just a few seconds to find a show you both watched. And that whole "water cooler" thing probably came from back before there were water fountains. And now a big TV event is called a "water cooler moment." But unless it's something really big like "American Idol" or something, the chances are that the first stranger you'd ask, didn't see it. Of course if something really bizarre happens, they may have caught it on the news or the internet.
~
With all the cable channels out there and all the niche networks and programming, it was really odd that my nephew and I were really big fans of those two episodes. How niche is this?:
The show is called "Robot Chicken." It comes on late at night on the cartoon network during what they call "Adult Swim." The two episodes were funny takes on the Star Wars franchise.

That's a picture of the evil emperor at the barbershop on a bad hair day. "Robot Chicken" is all stop-motion animation and really funny. My nephew and I were discussing and quoting segments and I was thinking today how wonderful that was. And how odd. We live halfway across the country from each other, he's a guy and I'm not and we have a 34 year age difference and we were quoting lines from that show. A 15 minute show that comes on late at night.
~
I don't know what the odds are on that, but if Mom had had a water cooler at her house, those surely would have been some water cooler moments for me.

It's sweet and unusual to have such a great connection and conversation with your nephew. I certainly don't have many of those moments at all with my nieces and one nephew, and it's not just the age difference.

I loved the three network days when everyone at school watched "Happy Days" on Tuesdays and "Welcome Back Kotter" on Thursdays...and who didn't watch The Carol Burnett Show?? :)

Btw, I've never seen the 15-min. show you talked about but I've seen the photo you posted somewhere...another blog maybe.

I just love when that happens

Ahhh...so that's Robot Chicken. My kids have talked about it, but I've never seen it myself. I've seen "The Venture Bros." and "Aqua Teen Hunger Force", but haven't caught Robot Chicken yet.
I think it's very cool that you and your nephew have a connection like that. :)

Those are astronomical odds. And you're so right about the lack of water cooler shows. I think maybe Seinfeld was the last true water cooler show. And then Survivor Episode I as a brief flash in the pan. It was all downhill from there.

I think Coach was a good water cooler item. In my office anyway.

You comments about network TV in the old days put me in mind of two series: Roots, and Rich Man, Poor Man. I recall when those were on they formed the basis of watercooler conversations at work the next day because you knew, with so few viewing options, the majority of people would have watched them.

Scarlet,
~~You have to see "Robot Chicken"! Good luck with your nieces and nephews. I guess I make extra effort because there are very few of them and they live so far away.

Jazz,
~~Yes, it's always cool when things work out.

Carole,
~~Look for it and record it. I bet you'll laugh somewhere in that 15 minutes. Besides, your kids are very bright - they know what they're talking about.

Xup,
~~Well "Survivor" always is with me. And Jazz and I go on and on about it.

Mr. Jazz,
~~No kidding. Tomorrow (later today, actually) I'm going to study the new cast and make my predictions.

Ian,
~~We didn't watch RMPM but EVERYONE was talking about "Roots." and remember, I lived in North Carolina at the time, so it was a really big deal.
