Word usage has always been fascinating to me. It's okay to say we have been praying for my poor grandmother to leave her sick and ravaged body and pass on to the heavenly realms. But nobody's gonna say they've been praying for her to die.
It's the same thing.

The irony is that perhaps she's been praying to die and might be the first to say it if she wasn't worried about upsetting people. I'm sorry for your impending loss. I hope she passes peacefully.
I would want to pass quickly. I hope she passes quickly, peacefully, and when I am gonna be home!
