I just read an old novel from 1971 that was set in Bergen, Norway. So to get the feel of the place I went to Google Earth to look around. Also some important scenes are set around the Stavkirke of Fantoft. It was described in such a way that I couldn't quite picture it, but I could look it up and there it was (pictured above). I also was able to see what a funicular looked like.~
I first did this years ago when I read The DaVinci Code. Every time a painting was described, I would look it up to see for myself. Maybe it's because my brain is like that of a small child, but it's kind of nice to have pictures to go with my stories.

Call me stupid, but I never thought to do that. It's a cool idea.
I use the internet when watching old movies to check on the actors I can't quite identify.
...and I would most certainly do what you did... if I read more books at home (I always tend to take them with me to the park or cafe, etc and I forget when I get home)

~~We are always stopping movies as soon as we see some actor and start going "Where do we know her/him from?" We always look them up. As for old movies, I think we already know who they all are because we are huge old movie buffs.

I rode a funicular in Pittsburgh, PA with my dad in 1977! It is affectionately referred to as "The Incline".
